HP ProLiant Gen8 Servers - ESXi 5: The /var/log/hpHelper.log File Can Grow Very Large and Fill the ESXi 5 RAMDisk

The /var/log/hpHelper.log file can grow very large and fill the ESXi 5 ramdisk.

A new version of the ESXi 5.x offline bundle is now available, which implements log rotation functionality for the hp-ams-snmp service. This enhancement will be incorporated in the offline bundle released in February 2013.

NOTE: Prior to the February 2013 release, the new version is available for download at the following link:

The files are being provided in the standard offline bundle format, however only the ams and smx vibs have been modified from the prior versions.

The new offline bundle resolves these issues:

  1. Log rotation implementation (ESXi ramdisk was filling up due to /var/log/hpHelper.log file size).

  2. Excessive logging of messages associated with the mpt2sas driver (this fix was first released in bundle

Additional details regarding the log rotation implementation changes/enhancements:

  1. Limits the hp-ams log (/var/log/hpHelper.log) file size.

  2. Supports log redirection as defined by the ESXi host parameter ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation.

NOTE: Following a modification of the scratch location, a reboot is required for this change to take effect.

Final Fix for this issue is available in the form of new HP AMS Service.
