When running VMware with an HPE Gen9 Smart Array controller connected to a Shared Storage RAID enclosure after a path failure and recovery, the system does not automatically rescan and re-add the path.

SCOPE

Any HPE ProLiant Gen9 Server running VMware ESXi 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 or 6.0 and configured with a Shared Storage RAID enclosure, such as HPE MSA 1040 SAN Storage, MSA 2040 SAN Storage or P2000 G3 MSA Array Systems and any of the following Smart Array Controllers:

  • HPE H241 Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HPE Smart Array P441 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P741m Controller
  • HP Smart Array P841 Controller

RESOLUTION

After updating the driver or firmware versions, the automatic rescan will recover the path. Use the following information to update:

  • VMware 5.0/5.1 = HPSA SCSI Driver Version 5.0.0.118-1
  • VMware 5.5 = HPSA SCSI Driver Version 5.5.0.118-1
  • VMware 6.0 = HPSA SCSI Driver Version 6.0.0.118-1
  • Online ROM Flash = Firmware Version 4.02 for HP Smart HBAs H241 or Smart Array P441, P741m, P481 Controllers

Perform the following steps to obtain the correct version of the firmware:

  1. Click on the following link:

    http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc

  2. Enter the product, such as "HPE H241 Smart Host Bus Adapter" in the Product Name box and click Go.
  3. Click the link for "Get drivers, software & firmware" on Download options tab.
  4. Select the appropriate operating system, such as VMware 6.0.
  5. Select the "Firmware - Storage Controller" or "Driver - Storage Controller" Category.
  6. Locate, download, and install Smart Array xxxx or Host Bus Adapter Controller firmware or driver versions:
  • Firmware Version 4.02 (or later)
    OR
  • Use the following table to update the Driver Version:
