Due to an anomaly in Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.45 (or earlier), the boot mode may be automatically changed in some isolated cases. The boot mode may change automatically from UEFI to Legacy Mode:

  • When a server blade is moved from one bay to another bay.

OR

  • When one more or more mezzanine cards are replaced or removed from the server.

This issue prevents the server from being able to boot the operating system. Power-On Self-Test (POST) errors will be reported when the boot mode automatically changes from UEFI to Legacy:

SCOPE

Any Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.45 (or earlier) on any of the following:

  • HP VC FlexFabric 10Gb/24-Port Module
  • HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module
  • HP VC Flex-10/10D Module
  • HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric-20/40 F8 Module

RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by upgrading to Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.50 (or later). Perform the following steps to obtain the latest Virtual Connect firmware version:

  1. Click on the following link:

    http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc

  2. Type in Virtual Connect Module name, for example "HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module" on "Select an HPE product” and click Go.
  3. Click on the "Download options" tab and click on "Get drivers, software & firmware" link.
  4. Select the appropriate operating system.
  5. Click on the category "Firmware-Blade Infrastructure".
  6. Locate, download, and install HP BladeSystem c-Class Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.50, dated 16 May 2016 (or any later version).

When this issue occurs and the server blade is not booting, as a workaround:

  • Change the boot mode in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) to UEFI.

OR

  • Power off the server and reapply the profile.
